The view from part of the Castillo de San Felipe in Cartagena, Colombia. This fort was the largest Spanish fort in the New World and was never captured by the enemy. It has many tunnels and hidden storage rooms that the Spanish used for storing gold awaiting shipment back to Spain. The tunnels also enabled soldiers to move about quickly without being seen by the enemy.
Construction began in 1536, starting at the top and working down. A significant expansion began in 1657 and again in 1763. After falling into disrepair, it was restored in the early 20th century.
